Dojo Glossary

One of the decisions we made early on: we’re going all in on this Dojo theme we’re creating. It’s not just a fun name, it’s an immersive experience. We started out with some lingo and it’s continued to evolve and grow as this Dojo world takes shape.

In case you ever wonder, “what the heck does ___ mean?” — we made this quick guide to our Dojo lingo.

Dojo

A designated period of time where coaches come together to practice intensely.

Sensei

A master coach who facilitates a Dojo experience.

Samurai

A coach devoted to mastering their craft.

Sparring

A practice of coaching, then getting immediate feedback.

Open Mat Sparring

A designated time for any Samurai to get extra practice coaching / getting coached / observing coaching / feedback.

Kata

A martial arts term for a specific “form” or movement. We use this to refer to deliberate practice elements such as: techniques, frameworks, mental models, and lenses to look at coaching through.

Bushido Code

A set of agreements which fosters clarity and purpose as we come together.

Stratagem

A plan or intention in order to get the most out of the Dojo experience.

Wiggle Break

A trademarked experience created by Christina Salerno. A very serious activity for when the energy has been stagnant and needs some shaking up. Excellent way to transition between activities. Simply wiggle your body in whatever way feels awesome to refresh and reengage.

That strange spirit finger thing…

Clapping on video is no fun with all the audio delays. Fluttering the fingers with palms facing forward was developed as an alternative. We think it’s really fun and we use it to honor, celebrate, and show appreciation of someone / something. We use it especially after a sparring match.
